The MonKanvo Collection, launched in February 2024 in celebration of Black History Month, literally weaves together a rich African tradition and Winnipeg practicality.
After moving from the Republic of Benin to Winnipeg and experiencing a prairie winter, entrepreneur Joseph Hervé Ahissou saw an opportunity to reimagine traditional woven African patterns in warm wool, and then created MonKanvo to produce blankets and accessories with an African flair.
Ahissou designs the cloth patterns in Winnipeg, and then has wool fabric featuring his designs woven by Quechua women in Peru. Those same women then create bags and other accessory items from these custom textiles.
This particular pattern features a black background and stripes in emblematic colours of African identity: green, yellow, blue, white, and red. This woven bag, comprised of two full-lined zip compartments, is big enough for all of your essentials – wallet, phone, keys – yet small enough not to weigh you down.
While created in celebration of Black History Month, this piece is stylish and functional enough to use year-round!
