The woman depicted in the delicate artwork on this vessel is Kumudha, a character from an ancient Indian folktale (and a more recently published short story), which addresses the theme of ecology and conservation. As the story goes, Kumudha turns herself into a blossom-covered tree, enabling her sisters to sell its fragrant flowers and support their family. Those picking from the tree are asked to be gentle with it and not take more than they need.
The artist, Ron Tanovitz, has a deep appreciation for ancient fables and stories from classical theatre, opera and the art world, and for their female lead characters of diverse cultures. Tanovitz has received awards for his artistic accomplishments as an art director, graphic designer and illustrator.
